New Delhi, March 08, 2019: A 19-year-old brain dead youth from Cheranallur gave a new lease of life to four persons from different parts of the state, after his family decided to donate his organs. Ajay Johny, son of Johny Naduvilaparambil, Cheranallur, was declared brain dead at Aster Medcity at 4 am on Tuesday where he was undergoing treatment after the motorcycle he was riding met with an accident.

Ajay, who was working as a welder, met with the accident on Varappuzha bridge on Saturday evening. Though he was immediately rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved. Ajay was the only child of Johny, who works as a mason and Sherly, a housewife.

The organs were harvested by a medical team under Dr. Mathew Jacob, Consultant Multi Organ Transplant Surgeon, AsterMedcity; Dr. Noushif M., Consultant, Hepato Pancreato Biliary and Gastro Intestinal Surgery and Dr. Nisha A, Consultant and Dr. Nidhin, Specialist, Anesthesiology. Liver, two kidneys and pancreas were harvested from the deceased. The liver was transplanted to a patient at Aster Medcity by a medical team under Dr. Mathew Jacob. The pancreas and one kidney were donated to patients at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi and the second kidney to a patient at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode.

“Parents decided to donate the organs as it can save lives of several persons and to keep his memory alive” said Richu George, the deceased’s cousin.

The recipients were selected from persons registered with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing Mrithasanjeevani – an online transplant registry of patients on waiting list for kidney, liver, heart and pancreas transplants in the state initiated by the state government.
