Enjoy summer with precautions

Bengaluru, March 27, 2016: The mercury level is rising and the days are getting longer. As temperature soars up, there’s no doubt that we’re moving towards the hottest month of the year. Statistics from the Met Department reveals that the temperatures will touch as high as 37 degrees centigrade. Summer is here to stay and it calls for special attention to your health.

Here are some tips by Dr Aravinda, CMS, Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal to help you sail through the summer in good health.

Stay in the shade

Reduce exposure to the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. Plan your day in such a way that you stay inside, or at least in the shade, during the middle of the day.

Use Sunscreens

Always apply sunscreen (at least SPF 15) 15 minutes before going outdoors. Make sure that you re-apply the sunscreen at least every two hours.

Cover yourself

Wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face and neck, and wear loose-fitting cotton clothing to keep cool and to protect your skin from the sun and mosquitoes. Wear sunglasses that provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts, and further lead to blindness if left untreated.

Keep yourself hydrated

It is extremely important that you drink enough fluids during the summer season to prevent from excessive dehydration. Keep drinking plenty of water when you’re outside. If you don’t like plain water, try flavoured water or a juice. Don’t consume carbonated soda or alcohol, as these drinks will make you even thirstier. Also, try avoiding too many physical activities that will exhaust you.

Manage seasonal allergies

Allergy to pollen can turn a fun summer outing into an itching, tearing, nose-running affair. Therefore, plan your outdoor activities on cooler, humid days, or after a cleansing rain. Pollen counts tend to be lower then.
