Iraqi woman back to her feet after getting treated in the city

Bangalore, January 19, 2017: 65-year-old Naeesha, from Iraq, was able to walk again after being wheelchair bound for a long time. Naeesha met up with an accident, when she was very young, and her hips got injured. However, with medication, she was fine, until few years ago, when she started experiencing difficulty walking due to the damaged hips. She underwent a left hip replacement surgery in Iraq. However, the joy of being able to walk lasted for a couple of years only as the left hip got damaged again leaving her on wheel chair.

She consulted several doctors from Iraq and Bangalore. However, none could give her hope to be able to walk again, until she met Dr. Ravi Chandra Kelkar, Consultant- Orthopaedics, Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal. Upon evaluation, the doctor explained that a bone reconstruction surgery needed to be done.

“Her left hip was badly damaged and the socket of the left hip bone had gone up to the urethra. Her thigh bone was missing and it was necessary to reconstruct everything for her to be able to walk again,” said Dr. Ravi Kelkar.

Naaesha underwent a six hours long complicated bone reconstruction surgery.

“The bone was reconstructed in 2 stages. First we put an artificial socket in the left hip. We then reconstructed the thigh bone. It is a complicated surgery, and we had to use 9 bottles of blood,” added the doctor.

After the surgery, Naaesha has recovered well. She was able to start walking on the second day post-surgery. She’s hoping to recover from the surgery within the next 2-3 months after which she plans to go for the surgery of right hip as well.

“This is a very complicated surgery and is still done in a very few centres in India and the world,” added the doctor.
