A Kochi hospital has developed a novel detection method which will facilitate the treatment of uterine cancer. The new technique which is known as ‘florescent sentinel node detection’ helps to accurately identifying the extent of tumour spread and to plan treatment.

The technique was developed by a team led by Dr. R. Anupama at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. The detection of sentinel node using fluorescent imaging after an indocyanine injection is less complicated than the previous technique, which used to be mapped with blue dye and colloid. In fact, a correct identification of the sentinel node helps to detect the extent of tumour spread and aids in planning effective treatment modalities.

Dr. R. Anupama also stated that though several hospitals in India have been using robotic surgical platform to treat uterine cancer this is the first time, such a procedure has been done in India.  IGMPI(http://igmpiindia.org/)
