Setting up of Human Organ Banks

New Delhi, December 17, 2013: There is a shortage of human organs in hospitals for treatment. 

Health being a state subject, it is for the States to consider setting up of human organ banks. So far, no proposal for setting up of human organ bank has been received from any State. An outlay of Rs. 25 crore has been made in the 12th five year plan for setting up of five regional tissue banks in five regions of the country. 

This was stated by Sh Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today.
