New Delhi, October 18, 2023 :   Dr. Roshan Kumar Jaiswal

Complex Trauma Surgeon Specialist

KIMS Hospitals, Sec-bad.

World Pediatric Bone and Joint Day” observed worldwide on October 19th is aimed to spread awareness about the impact of musculoskeletal conditions among the children, promote early detection and treatment, and emphasize the importance of bone and joint health in children. Bone and Joint infections generally termed as Musculoskeletal disorders affect the nerves, muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments.

The theme for this year, “Each ONE Train ONE Save ONE,”

Few examples of musculoskeletal disorders are here…

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Bone fractures
  • Growth plate injuries
  • Tendinitis
  • Developmental dysplasia of hip
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Osteoporosis

All of these disorders affect function and mobility. Some of the most common causes of musculoskeletal disorders in children include car accidents, playground accidents, and sports injuries. Other contributing factors to musculoskeletal disorders are obesity, poor posture, and Vitamin D deficiency.

Schedule your child for a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, or DXA. This test measures their bone density. Knowing this will help you determine if your child is at risk for bone fractures. Educate yourself on the different pediatric disorders.

Prevention and early treatment will help reduce the chance of musculoskeletal issues affecting them when they are adults. The following are tips for health bones and joints for your children:

  • Have them eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet, including plenty of sources of calcium, vitamin D, as well as omega-3 fatty acids. Dairy, dark leafy greens, fatty fish, and plenty of sunshine are examples of food sources.
  • Make sure they engage in regular exercise to prevent or reduce overweight and obesity issues. Aerobic exercises, as well as some weight-bearing exercises are important to keeping bones healthy and strong.
  • Small injuries can become much worse if it is not treated promptly for developing children who are overweight.

Make sure your child eats healthy, gets enough calcium and vitamin D, and wears protective gear when playing sports. These things will help prevent musculoskeletal disorders.
