27 year old youth gives a new lease of life to a 46 year old heart failure patient

Bengaluru, March 02, 2018: A 27 year old youth gives a new lease of life to a 46 year old heart failure patient at M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre – a unit managed by Narayana Health. The 27 year old donor who hails from Krishnagiri was admitted at Apollo Hospital, Banerghatta following an accident with a head injury on February 26th. However, he was declared brain dead yesterday (February 27th) after which the family consented to donate their son’s organs.

The heart was retrieved by a team of doctors at M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and was transported from Apollo Hospital, Bannerghatta to M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Mattikere this morning. The distance of 28 kms was covered  in a span of 22 minutes.

Hailing from Dharwad, the recipient is a 46 year old woman suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Initially  she was treated at SDM Narayana Heart Center, Dharwad and was later referred to M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Bengaluru, where she was advised to undergo a heart transplant.

The retrieval of the heart from the donor’s body was done by Dr. Julius Punnen, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic & Heart Transplant, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Dr. Guru Patil, Anaesthetist, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and Dr. Shilpa Rudradevaru, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre.

The heart transplant was performed by Dr. Ravi Shankar Shetty, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic & Heart Transplant Surgeon, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Naga Malesh, Interventional Cardiologist, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and Dr. Prashanth Ramamurthy, Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre.
