38 year old gets a new lease of life through heart transplant from a 28 year old

Bengaluru, August 16, 2019: 38 year old man from Bagalkot got a new lease of life today after undergoing heart transplant at Narayana Health City. His saviour is a 28 year old man from Mysuru who had succumbed to a traumatic brain injury. He was admitted at BGS Apollo Mysuru. Doctors had declared him brain dead yesterday (15th August 2019) and the family consented for organ donation.

The heart was transported yesterday night from Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysuru to Narayana Health City, Benagluru with the help of green corridor. A distance of 170 kms was covered in a span of 2 hours 15 minutes.

Hailing from Bagalkot, the recipient was suffering from complex condition- congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries, severe bi-centricular dysfunction, class IV heart failure. He was on medical management at Narayana Health City for the last 9 months. As his condition could only be improved through heart transplant, the doctors requested him to register at Jeevasarthake. Fortunately, he received a matching heart yesterday night. The transplant surgery has been successful and the patient is recovering. The patient belongs to the lower economic strata. He is a beneficiary of Health Scheme run by Government of Karnataka under Vajpayee Arogyashree (SAST). Narayan Health City is empanelled to do all solid organ transplants under this scheme. The transplant is the first heart transplant that has been performed under the Vajpayee Arogyashree Scheme (SAST).

The heart retrieval and transplant was performed by team led by Dr. Julius Punnen, Heart & Lung Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Varun Shetty, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Shashiraj S, Cardiologist- Congenital Heart Diseases and team of support staff.
