6 year old girl’s heart gives a new lease of life to a 9 year old

Bengaluru, March 09, 2018: A 9 year old boy gets a new lease of life as he undergoes a heart transplant at M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre – a unit managed by Narayana Health. The donor is a 6 year old girl from Chitradurga who was suffering from Meningioma with obstructive hydrocephalus for which she was getting treated at AJ Hospital, Mangalore. However, she was declared brain dead by the doctors today and the family consented to donate their daughter’s organs.

The heart was retrieved by a team of doctors at M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and was airlifted from AJ Hospital, Mangalore to Bangalore airport this evening. The air ambulance landed at the airport at 5.16 pm. Further, with the help from the Traffic Police department, it was transported through a ‘Green Corridor’ from airport to M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Mattikere. The distance of 36kms was covered in a span of 24 minutes.

Hailing from Boni, a village in Andhra Pradesh, the recipient is a 9 year old student suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy with severe LV dysfunction. He was on medical management with M S Narayana Heart Centre since the last seven months and later on advised to undergo a heart transplant.

The retrieval of the heart from the donor’s body was done by Dr. Julius Punnen, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic & Heart Transplant, M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and Dr. Marla of AJ Hospital.
