New Delhi, November 11, 2018: It is difficult to believe that in India, just a decade ago, Cancer was not a commonly known disease, but at present cancer is on the rise and prevalence in the country. Changing lifestyles, smoking, consumption of tobacco, increased  consumption of alcohol, changing dietary habits, obesity,  late age pregnancy and fewer births, environment pollution urbanization are all related to a significant increase in incidence of cancer in India.

Colorectal cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in India after lung, breast and cervix. In the Indian scenario, Colorectal cancer stands fourth in men and third in women with respect to incidence and mortality rates.

However, compared to the Western countries, colorectal cancer incidence rates are much lower in India. The actual reason for this low incidence in India is unclear, but experts believe it may be due to lower consumption of red and processed meat, and a lower prevalence of obesity in the country than in Western countries. Colon cancer is slightly more common than rectal cancer in the Western world, whereas, rectal cancer is more common in India. Colon and rectum cancer is most frequently diagnosed among people aged 65-74 (median age 68), although an upward trend towards the lower age group is being noted of late.
