New Delhi, 18 Mar, 2015: Psoriasis is a disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly turns on the skin, producing red, itchy, scaly patches. According to researchers interleukin 23 which is a type of signaling molecule through cascade of reactions leads to inflammation in the skin and excessive growth of skin cells and dilation of blood vessels.

Significant recovery was observed in many of the patients suffering from Psoriasis. A sample from one psoriasis patient showed thickening of the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis .Eight weeks after treatment, the epidermis has thinned to a normal level.

This happened when a single dose of an experimental treatment with a human antibody was administered that blocks an immune signaling protein interleukin 23 from binding to the receptors on the cells that respond to it which is crucial to the disease. This trial was conducted at Rockefeller University and seven other centers. 31 patients were given treatment and improvement was seen in their symptoms. On average, patients who received the treatment had a more than 80 percent improvement in the severity and extent of their skin lesions that continued until tracking ended six weeks after treatment.IGMPI
