New Delhi, July 04, 2019: Constipation , also known as costiveness or dyschezia, denotes infrequent bowel movements, often caused by insufficient fibre in diet or low fluid intake or decreased physical activity, hypothyroidism, celiac disease, defecation habit ,intake of certain medicines , non celiac gluten sensitivity , pelvic floor disorder.  Certain metabolic and endocrine problems like hypercalcemia ,hypothyroidism, porphyria, chronic kidney disease might lead to constipation as a result of it. Symptoms include abdominal pain bloating, hard and dry stool and an uncomfortable feeling of incomplete bowel movement.Ways how to relieve constipation depends upon the cause leading to it and the time duration a person has been facing the problem. One might mitigate constipation by drinking enough fluids including more fibre in diets like fruits vegetables whole grains, and doing adequate physical exercise. Being physically active helps the food to move through the digestive system . An inactive person tends to  get constipated .

  1. Drink lots and lots of fluid- taking a glass of hot water every morning helps to reduce the problem of constipation. Hot water helps to clear the anal tract. A glass of hot milk with a spoon of ghee can also combat constipation. The moisture of the ghee and the vitamins present in milk softens the stool and also clears the anal tract. One can also take a spoon of olive oil regularly in empty stomach. The vitamins, iron, omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants present in olive oil not only loosen the hard stool but also make the digestive tract clear thereby minimising the problem of constipation. Physical exercise not only keeps the body healthy but also improves the bowel  movement resulting in complete passage of bowel movement. A regular morning walk ok for 10 to 15 minutes is highly recommended. It can be followed by physical activities like stretching, jogging, swimming, running to reduce the problem of constipation.
  4. Massaging the perineum-perineum is that stretch of skin which separates the vagina from the anus. Massaging the perineum by trusting constantly on that part of the skin with the pointer finger helps to ease constipation by promoting bowel movement and improving bowel function.
