Mumbai, August 16, 2024: Fortis Hospital Mulund, conducted India’s first International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM) endorsed dedicated Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) workshop for Emergency Medicine doctors, in association with the Society for Emergency Medicine India and Association of Healthcare providers India. This two-day program,hosted on August 9th& 10th, was first of its kind as it offered content tailored for Emergency Medicine specialists, along with endorsements and hands-on skill training for the delegates.
ECMO is a life-support technique that plays a very crucial role in resuscitation, especially for patients who are in cardiogenic shock and have lung injury. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (E-CPR), which combined the principles of ECMO with traditional CPR, can be life-saving for young adults experiencing refractory cardiac arrest. The philosophy, principles and evidence-based practices behind these techniques were discussed in this program. Moreover, hands-on training for important skills like cannulation, ECMO initiation, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping was delivered to all delegates who took part in the workshop.
Dr Sandeep Gore, Director–Emergency Medicine, Fortis hospital, Mulund and National Vice President of Society for Emergency Medicine India, who was the organizing chairperson of the program said, “An Emergency Medicine doctor should master the technique of resuscitation, they should be aware of concepts and principlesbehind use of ECMO in clinical practice. In coming years, E-CPR will be standard of care for refractory cardiac arrest cases in young adults.”

The simulations were demonstrated with ECPR, ECMO transport, emergency cannulation and troubleshooting scenarios. The need for shock team and upskilling of Emergency Medicine doctors emerged as the number one takeaway for doctors.”
