Dr. Sujatha Thyagarajan, Lead & HOD – Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric Emergency at Aster RV Hospital
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has become an important issue among respiratory infections in children in the last few years. Though it is like other viral infections, where symptoms include cough, cold, and fever, its clinical presentations and treatment modalities require closer attention.
HMPV is a viral pathogen that mainly causes infection in the respiratory system. Most of its infections are characterized by mild and self-limiting symptoms that are responsive to supportive care. A proportion of children may experience severe forms of the disease that require hospitalization and other advanced forms of care like oxygen or High flow Oxygen in PICU.
Management and Outcome
The mainstay of HMPV treatment in Aster RV Hospital was supportive care, which comprised hydration, fever management, and oxygen therapy where required. Targeted therapies included antibiotics for the bacterial pathogens co-infecting children. The hospitalized children recovered very well, meaning that timely intervention and comprehensive care had been successfully achieved.
Preventive Measures
Prevention will still be the basis of the burden reduction for HMPV and other respiratory viruses. Prevention measures are as follows, yet quite direct and easy to follow:
• Not getting exposed to the close people who are infected with this virus
• Maintaining good hand hygiene
• Wearing a mask while staying in crowded places or risky conditions
• Hydration is very important for individuals to remain healthy.
It also gives symptomatic care as early as possible in the course of illness.
New Trends in Respiratory Illnesses
Though HMPV is a significant cause for concern, other respiratory pathogens also contribute greatly to the present burden of disease. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections have caused an upsurge in chest infections and hospitalizations among children. The pattern is consistent with the epidemic proportions of Mycoplasma infections seen in China last year. Unlike viral infections, Mycoplasma infections require specific antibiotics, which have been very effective in treating the condition.
Like most respiratory viruses, HMPV is only risky if undetected or delayed in its management. Statistics at Aster RV Hospital show the necessity of surveillance, early interventions, and wholesome care for favourable outcomes.
