While Arthroscopic surgery (also known as the “key hole surgery”) involves a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat problems of joints with very high accuracy, Orthopaedic sports medicine is an allied branch of arthroscopic surgery which deals with the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries suffered during any type of sports.
The diagnosis and treatment of many types of sports injuries can be provided with the help of arthroscopic keyhole surgery and thus help in early rehabilitation of the sports person with a team work coordination between the surgeon, physiotherapist and the sports trainer.
Arthroscopic surgery is performed under local, spinal or general anesthesia depending on the joint involved and the procedure, thus being totally pain free. The surgery involves making key hole incisions around the joint involved and then introducing pencil sized lens which is attached to a high definition camera, fibre optic light source and HD TV monitor. With the help of these high quality ultra modern instruments the surgeon can clearly see all structures inside the joint by just making a keyhole. Depending on the problem seen inside the joint, the surgeon then makes other keyhole incisions around the joint to pass very fine sophisticated instruments into the joint to cure the problem. Thus the problem inside is treated with very high accuracy and success without even opening the joint.
“Arthroscopic surgery offers the unique advantage of treating the joint problems using a keyhole method. So the patient is on his feet or is able to use his arm for routine activities from the very next day after most of the arthroscopic procedures,” adds Dr. Maninder Shah Singh, Foot, Ankle & Small Joint specialist at ISIC.
