Access to diabetic care

November 12, 2021: Diabetes Mellitus, through its two manifestations, affect individuals across age groups. Type I ismore prevalent among adolescents and young adults and Type II occurs in older age groups. The changing trend ofType IIDiabetes Mellitus occurrence in much younger age even impacting children is a wakeup call. There are many predisposing and precipitating factors.

The changing lifestyle with increased screen time, less possibilities ofindulging in outdoor play activities both around living dwellings and at schools have increased the burden of this disease through obesity, thereby seen as impaired glucose tolerance at a very young age.

Stress is one of the most important factors which predisposes to diabetes. With the present challenge of the global pandemic, it is very pertinent to be aware of one’s already existing risk factors which will add ontothe consequences of this stress.

Bringing in awareness about the risk factors at aschoollevel and encouraging movement through regular physical education will address the early onset ofType II diabetes.

Viewing the apparent illness as an iceberg, there are many who are blissfully ignorant that they are with prediabetes conditions and on the verge of becoming diabetic with an added risk factor. So, living consciouslyby addressing the lifestyle changes and undergoing regular health check-ups would lessen the future burden of this disease.
