Ahmedabad, August 29,2022: Dr. Arvind Sharma, Neuro physician at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad, has been elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Geneva-based World Stroke Organization (WSO).
The elections for the WSO board of directors for the period 2022-2026 took place between July and 25, and 959 members of the organisation placed their votes.
Dr. Sharma, who is secretary of the Indian Stroke Association and Director of Brain – Heart Foundation, will take over as WSO Board member on October 22 at the World Stroke Congress to be held in Singapore.
“I am thrilled to be elected to the Board of World Stroke Organization, which is the only global body solely focused on stroke. Stroke is the second largest cause of death and a major cause of disability worldwide. As a board member, my efforts will be focused on making a meaningful contribution towards stroke awareness and advocacy,” said Dr. Sharma.
Stroke prevalence is on the rise globally. In India alone, more than 18 lakh stroke cases are reported every year. Around a quarter of the patients are less than 50 years old. Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death. A sedentary lifestyle, smoking, consumption of alcohol, obesity, and lack of physical activity are the key risk factors for stroke, and around 80% of the cases can be prevented with lifestyle changes.
Dr. Sharma will take over as WSO Board member on October 22 and will have a term of four years.
