Mumbai, March 16, 2023: First Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) assisted complex angioplasty was done successfully by Cardiologist Dr. Hemant Khemani & Anesthesiologist Dr. Sagar Yesale in Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali on a patient who was suffering from coronary Heart disease. The Shockwave C2 Coronary IVL Catheter is used before implanting a stent, to open the arteries that supply blood to the heart (coronary arteries) that are narrowed or blocked due to calcification. The Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) System was used to open up calcific blocked coronary arteries for one of the first time in Western suburbs.
Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy is a novel procedure which brings hope for those suffering from an advanced form of coronary artery disease (CAD) having angina or heart attack in which the blockage becomes very hard due to deposit of calcium. This happens in 20% to 25% of the patients especially those who are elderly, diabetic, have chronic kidney disease, have long standing blockages or previous bypass surgery. Commenting on this Cardiologist Dr. Hemant Khemani from Apex Superspeciality Hospitals says, “The Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) System with the Shockwave C2 Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) Catheter consists of the Shockwave C2 Coronary IVL Catheter, IVL Connector Cable, and IVL Generator. The catheter is a tube-like device called a balloon catheter that contains integrated lithotripsy emitters, which can break up hard materials (calcification) that restricts blood flow to the heart. In this procedure we deliver the catheter to the heart by making a small cut (incision) in the patient’s arm or leg. The lithotripsy emitters at the end of the catheter create pressure waves that are intended to break up the calcification that is restricting the blood flow in the vessels of the heart. This helps open the blood vessels when the balloon is inflated (angioplasty). After using the Shockwave system, we implanted a different device called a stent, which is a metal tube that helps to keep the vessel open. ”
The Shockwave C2 Coronary IVL Catheter technology of clearing blockages in the artery will reduce risks involved in angioplasty including perforation and dissection, risking patient’s life. Angioplasty through this technique is quicker than the traditional one. This technique takes around half an hour for the entire process in comparison to four hours in traditional ones, The Shockwave C2 Coronary IVL Catheter technique will prove to be a major help to elderly people, people with diabetes and those who don’t want bypass surgery or for those on whom it couldn’t be performed added by Cardiologist Dr. Hemant Khemani from Apex Superspeciality Hospitals, Borivali.
