New Delhi, October 04, 2017: In today’s era, everyone around wishes to look beautiful, smart and elegant. However, beauty and elegance is not only defined by facial features but also depends on the smile each person carries. A well-presented smile is also a showcase of ones beauty. But to enhance this, it is extremely important to maintain a balance between the white and the pink in the mouth. This can be achieved by regular visits to dentists for check-ups and more importantly by following a strict, periodic MAINTENANCE protocol.

Maintenance of teeth plays a major role in keeping oneself healthy. This not only helps to naturally achieve the right balance between the white and the pink in the mouth but also enables the individual himself/ herself to feel fresh. Such regular discipline also reduces the likelihood of suffering from problems like bad breath and allows the individual to confidently flaunt his well-groomed smile.

In addition to regular dentist visits, at least once or twice a year, there are also some necessary home care measures that should be followed by individuals to keep good oral health.

A very helpful and quick review of the homecare measures are as follows:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with a medium-bristled multi-tufted brush.
  • Remember to change your brush after every three to four months.
  • A proper size toothbrush that is comfortable for the mouth should be used.
  • A scientific brushing technique should be used and if not known, should be learnt from a dentist to avoid any problems like wear of tooth etc.
  • Vigorous overzealous brushing of teeth leads to receding gums that may further expose the root surfaces making them sensitive and unbearable. Moreover, these areas are prone to decay.
  • Tongue cleaning with tongue cleaners should be done. In areas where the plaque still remains use of disclosing tablets will be helpful.
  • Flossing of teeth once a day is mandatory so that all the plaque and food particles accumulated in between the teeth will be removed as brush cannot reach these areas.
  • In-between snacking of meals should be avoided as it keeps the pH of the mouth at a lower level thus making the environment favourable for the bacteria to grow and hence the further decay. Also, eating too much sugary food can lead to the same problem.
  • In case of observations like bleeding gums, bad breath, mouth ulcers, or any abnormal changes in the oral cavity, a dentist should be immediately notified so that the appropriate medical action can be undertaken.
  • Fluoridated toothpastes should be used as they not only prevent the decay but also help in repair of the enamel.
  • Avoid bad habits like nail biting, pencil biting, clenching of teeth (if occurs report to the dentist), tobacco consumption with betel nut and betel quid, alcohol consumption, smoking etc.
  • Maintain a very healthy diet and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and further dryness of the mouth. Also, water helps to keep the tissues moist and the saliva helps to protect our teeth from decay since it has various substances that act like a buffer and also assist in proper digestion which contributes to overall good health management.

Make sure to follow this simple recipe of dental hygiene and care at home to lead a healthy and happy life with lovely smiles.
