– Underweight triplets were born in the 27th week of pregnancy itself
– Babies are two and half months old now, and have a stable health
Visakhapatnam, September 18, 2020:Triplets born in just the 27th week of pregnancy, instead of the regular 37-40 weeks, weighing 700 grams, 950 grams, and 970 grams, were given new lease of life by the team of experts at the Medicover Hospitals, one of the leading healthcare providers in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam. These babies Diyan, Diyasri and Dityasri are now two and half months old, and their health is stable.
The babies, conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technique at a clinic in Srikakulam, were born major complications. The delivery of babies itself occurred due to the ‘rupture of membranes’, which colloquially is called ‘water breaking’, and the mother could not continue with the pregnancy. Post the delivery, the babies were rushed to Medicover Hospitals for better care under the watchful eyes of a team of neonatologists.
Commenting on the complications, Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore, Consultant Neonatologist, Medicover Hospitals said, “It was one of the most challenging cases we faced, and survival of such kids is minimal, even under the advanced western healthcare mechanism. However, it was the dedication of the team at Medicover Hospitals, and our round-the-clock surveillance that ensured the kids were stabilized. The lungs and other vital organs were underdeveloped and development in the babies was stunted, posing the threat of they contractingsevere infections, including the deadly coronavirus.”
“But the challenges posed were mitigated with extreme care, and the babies were put on ventilation followed by non-invasive respiratory support. They were fed intravenous nutrition for a period of three weeks to ensure development of vital functions. And once the condition improved with vision improving and brain functioning normally, the babies were discharged from the hospital,” added Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore.
The team of experts comprising of Dr. Vijay, Dr. Indu and the entire support staff ensured babies survived despite all odds. The mother of these triplets _ Mrs. Jayalaxmi_ whose husband Mr. Shanmukh Rao is a farmer from Nandigam Mandal in Srikakulum district, gives credit of survival of her babies to Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore and his team at the Medicover Hospitals. The family understands that the babies need regular Doctor follow-up for the next couple of years, and any illness must be taken seriously for a while. The hospital also ensured that the parents stay mentally strong during the treatment phase and will be geared up to meet any possible health challenges over the next 20-30 months.
