National, September 29, 2020: Doctors at the Medicover Hospitals performed a complex procedure to save a 52-year-old Covid-19+ve female patient _ Mrs. Sheshamma _ whose condition deteriorated rapidly due to severe breathlessness, caused due to sever leakage of three valves inside the heart. A procedure lasted for many hours before the patient could be revived and her condition stabilized to ensure she was fully out of danger.
In these times of Covid-19 pandemic, breathlessness could be the result of contracting coronavirus. Hence, all necessary precautions taken and required tests were performed to ascertain the status which turned was positive with coronavirus count getting detected in the 3-4 range. Yet, the team of specialists led by Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons, Dr. Lokesh Rao and Dr. Trilok had to take a chance to operate on the patient to save a life.
Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Lokesh and Dr. Trilok of Medicover Hospitals said, “Saving the life of a patient is paramount for a medical professional, under any circumstances. And even in this case, we were determined to jump in and defeat the adversary, which posed multiple challenges to us. However, once the situation was ascertained and patient’s condition was stabilized, we resorted to a marathon 5-hours surgical procedure to replace the two valves in the heart. Post which, constant vigil on the patient was necessary to avoid any further complications before she could recover in full.”
The mortality rate in patients with diseased valves (mitral valve and aortic valve) plus testing positive for Covid-19 virus, is as high as 90%. But it was the efficiency of the patient and meticulous planning of treatment that ensured the patient recovers fully. After putting her under observation in the Cardiac ICU, the patient was discharge after five days to lead a normal life in the times ahead.
