Mayank Sarkar, a two-year-old boy from Tripura, weighed just 5.5kg as against the age appropriate 12kg. He used to throw up at least 25-30 times a day as he could not digest any food. After visiting many hospitals, Mayank and his parents landed at city-based B R SSNMC Hospital where the boy was diagnosed with duodenojejunal junction malrotation or malrotation of the intestine, a life-threatening condition if left untreated.

On August 1. The baby underwent a surgery in which the damaged bowel loops were removed and the jumbled-up intestine was released. “it is indeed a miracle that the boy had survived for two years without being treated. ” said Dr. M Keshava Murthy, paediatric surgeon. This rare case would be seen in one in 20,000 live births, he added. According to Dr.Ravi Shankar Marpalli, paediatrician, who treated the toddler, this was the one of the most challenging cases in his three-decade career.

“The baby had delayed developmental milestones. He wasn’t able to stand on his own and was malnourished,” said Dr. Marpalli. The toddler, second son of labourer couple Ratan and Mira Sarkar was earlier diagnosed by doctors in Tripura and Kolkata as suffering from nerve problem, but he hadn’t received the required treatment. “When we came to meet doctors in Bengaluru, we didn’t know that the problem was in his stomach” said Ratan Sarkar, the boy’s farther.

The two-year-old was discharged from the hospital on August 10 and the family has returned to Tripura.
