Doctors should work in rural areas to serve the nation-Manoj Sinha

New Delhi, September 26, 2016: The Minister of Communications Shri Manoj Sinha today exhorted the medical professionals to devote their time in rural areas to serve the poor and the needy. Addressing a meeting after releasing the Commemorative Postage Stamp on Centenary Founder’s Day of Lady Hardinge Medical College and Associated Hospitals here, he said that doctors should take a pledge to work in rural areas for some years, before seeking posting in cities and towns. He said that 100 years ago, the wife of the then Viceroy Lord Hardinge had taken note of the paucity of women doctors in India and decided to establish a dedicated lady medical college which was named as Lady Hardinge. She collected money to establish this institution from the rulers of the then Princely States, Social workers and common man. Shri Sinha informed that the old building of Lady Hardinge Medical College had already been declared as National Heritage monument in 2005.

Shri Sinha said that contribution of Lady Hardinge Medical College is immense in the country as the doctors have a glorious past of treating and curing the patients with healing touch. Quoting from a Coffee table book released on the occasion, the Minister said that young and dynamic leaders from this college had excelled in different fields and brought laurels to the institution by winning several national and international awards.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt Anupriya Patel said that as the Lady Hardinge college is growing in all dimensions, there is pressing need to add new additional infrastructure. She assured all the help from the Health Ministry for restart of construction work at the earliest. Smt Patel also expressed hope that students and doctors of this great institution would keep the name of Lady Hardinge Medical College at high esteem by their dedicated work and selfless service to the countrymen.

Addressing the gathering the BJP MP from New Delhi Parliamentary Constituency Smt Meenakshi Lekhi said that the rich history of the institution is replete with personal contribution of individuals. She said that Lady Hardinge Medical College today stands on top and there is need to take it to the global standard.
