Drug alert notice to GlaxoSmithKline for Zovirax Eye Ointment by MHRA

New Delhi, November 2014 – Drug alert has notice has been issued by MHRA for Zovirax Eye Ointment (aciclovir 3%) which is being manufactured by GlaxoSmithline. The Zovirax Eye Ointment is used to treat eye infections caused by herpes simplex virus. GlaxoSmithKline has recalled two batches of the ointment as a precautionary measure.

The Recall was made after a pharmaceutical ingredient used in the batches was found to contain metal particles which were outside the upper specification limit for particle size.No complaints or adverse reaction reports relating to this issue had been received by the company at the time of recall as confirmed by MHRA.

The batches with numbers 3L942 and 3M941 have been recalled. The MHRA advised that Remaining stocks [of the batches] should be quarantined and returned to the original supplier for credit as no alternative batches of the ointment are currently available and shortages are being reported. IGMPI
