Eye Donation – the most beautiful gift for mankind

New Delhi, May 12, 2018: Eyes are one of the most vital organs and render an ability that makes living easier. The Sanskrit saying “Sarvendriya Namnayanam Pradhanam” which means eyes are the most essential part of the human body, is no exaggeration.

The mere thought of spending one’s life in dark is scary. Performing daily chores can be a mammoth task for someone who is visually impaired. Spending only an hour in the dark can bring us close to the plight of someone visually challenged. Even a few minutes of power cut at night makes us feel overpowered and leaves us helpless.

Fortunately, an easy way to help the less fortunate in this scenario is by opting for eye donation. The process is easy and does not need you to have truckloads of money. A charity in the truest form, donating eyes after death can help bring light into someone’s life.

Unluckily, misconceptions and religious beliefs hamper this cause. Despite being the second largest populated country, the paltry number of eye donations remains appalling. According to the data by the Health Ministry, the year 2013-2014 saw only 51,354 eye donations. Also, only 22,384 of them were used for transplant, wasting 50 per cent of the donated eyes.

Owing to the fact that people need to be educated about the importance of eye donation, multiple efforts are being made across the nation.Mohan Foundation, Eye Bank Association of India, Organ Donation Indiaare some of the societies working closely forthis cause.

Celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan amongst others, too have registered themselves for this cause. Spiritual leaders like Baba Ramdev, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh from Dera Sacha Sauda and Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar have also been encouraging the masses for organ donation. A step that’s not just impactful, but highly influential at the same time, it is helping people become aware of the cause.

The Government of India is also making efforts to educate the public about the importance of eye donation. Camps and other activities are being organized with ads on television, radios, cinema slides and more.

Eye donation is a process followed for people with corneal blindness. It is a significant step in improving the lives of people. The front, transparent tissue is referred to as cornea and is used to restore vision. The other parts of donated eyes are used for research and training purposes. Donated eyes also help in developing cure for different eye diseases. Each pair of eyes donated, gives two people the gift of light.
