Coimbatore, September 5, 2022: GBCI India, the nation’s foremost authority on sustainability in building design, construction, and operations, has announced that it has awarded GKNM Hospital with the prestigious LEED v4.1 Operations + Maintenance (O+M) Platinum certification. This makes it the first project in the Indian healthcare sector to receive Platinum, the highest level of certification offered in this domain. GBCI India is part of the U.S. Green Building Council (‘USGBC’) that provides independent oversight of professional credentialing and project certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (‘LEED’) green building rating system.
GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, installed energy-efficient lighting in its facilities as a part of its continuing sustainability initiative, resulting in energy savings of more than three lakh units annually. Existing VAM chillers at the hospital have been replaced with screw chillers, which has resulted in a total savings of more than 14 lakh liters of biodiesel. GKNM Hospital has a 250kW solar power plant installed on site, which generates nearly 1000 units per day. LEED v4.1 is the next generation standard for green building design, construction, operations, and performance. With this notable certification, GKNM Hospital has accomplished yet another significant step toward environmental sustainability and preservation.
Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, Chief Executive Officer, GKNM Hospital, said, “We are honored to be recognized for our unwavering commitment to the environment and sustainability. Becoming the first project in India’s healthcare sector to receive this highest level of certification is a pivotal milestone in our journey. It demonstrates not only our dedication to offer the greatest medical treatment to the people, but also our contributions to helping safeguard the environment for a better future.”
Mr. Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director – Southeast Asia & Middle East, GBCI India, said, “GKNM Hospital has been successful in creating a positive impact on the environment. At the same time, it has also made strong climate commitments. GBCI will continue to work with more such healthcare institutions and organizations to ensure sustainability standards.”
