Bangalore, August 15, 2018: Sankara Eye Hospital, participated in an event by Young Indians- CII and various other hospitals where doctors across hospitals united together for the campaign “Gift an Organ” which is to spread the importance of organ donation.
There is a huge shortage of organs in India and patients die while on the waiting list as they do not get an organ on time. A brain-dead person’s organs can give a new lease of life to at least nine patients suffering from organ failure. There is a need to promote cadaver or deceased organ donation rather than relying on living donors in order to avoid the risk of commercial trading of organs and also to avoid the inherent risk to the health of the living donor.
A curated panel discussion saw transplants specialists discuss aspects and suggest advocacy changes including use of technology to ensure optimum organ retrieval transplant.
Speaking on the initiative, Dr AnandBalasubramaniam, Sankara Eye Hospital Bengaluru said “Miracles Cannot Cure the Blind. On the threshold of the Independance day let us pledge to ensure that every Indian is aware to Gift An Organ and together eliminate 1 million who are completely blind from corneal blindness.”
Laeeq Ali, Chapter Chair CII – Young Indians Bengaluru expressed “Bengaluru has been in the forefront as silicon capital and entrepreneurship capital. We at Young Indians will work with all hospitals to encourage 100000 Bengalurueans to pledge to Gift an Organ”.
The day also witnessed trans genders from Sangama come forward to innovatively carry forward the messages of organ donation.
