Government Mechanisms to Maintain Transparency in Admission Process in Private Medical Colleges


New Delhi December 14, 2013:
In order to streamline and also to make transparent the admission process, the MCI, with the previous approval of the Central Government, notified amendments to its Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997 introducing the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET). However, on the directions of the Supreme Court of India, NEET has been discontinued for the current academic year and presently, the matter is sub-judice. 


In case of private unaided medical colleges, the admission and fee structure is decided by the Committee set up by the respective State Governments under the Chairmanship of a retired High Court Judge in pursuance of the directions of the Supreme Court of India. It is for the Committee to decide whether the fee proposed by an Institute is justified and the fee fixed by the Committee is binding on the Institute. The committee is also monitoring the admission process. 

Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued discharge notices to some medical colleges for discharge of students, who did not meet the eligibility criteria as per MCI’s Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997.
