Hitachi Participates in Demonstration Project Realizing Hospital’s Energy Saving

  • Hitachi selected for ICT-Based Green Hospital Demonstration Project in India

New Delhi, Mar 30, 2015 – Hitachi, Ltd. (“Hitachi” / TSE:6501) and Hitachi India Pvt. Ltd. today announced that they have been selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (“NEDO”) to undertake a feasibility study in India for an ICT-based green hospital demonstration project (“the demonstration project”) which facilitates hospital’s energy saving.

The demonstration project will enable the tracking and visualization of a hospital’s overall energy use by putting an IT system environment in place and upgrading to highly efficient systems and equipment. It will facilitate energy conservation by optimizing overall energy use. A preliminary survey to confirm the activities of the demonstration project and decide on other matters will be undertaken from April to October 2015. Following a review by a screening committee at NEDO, the demonstration project is aimed to run for approximately two years.

Mr. Naotoshi Nishida, Vice President, Infrastructure Systems Company, Hitachi India said, “Data storage and energy management system for more efficient healthcare service are very important. We are very glad that we can participate to this project; because, Hitachi India executes long term Operation and Management for Energy & Data management service and simultaneously expands the data analysis for further improvement in handling increasing patients efficiently.”

Mr. Tetsuya Tanaka, Chief Representative, NEDO New Delhi said, “NEDO supports collaboration between Japanese enterprise and developing country’s body. We would like to strengthen India-Japan relationship by materializing this project through Hitachi for taking initiative to work in direction of making Green Hospital in India by introducing efficient energy management system.”

With a population of approximately 1.25 billion, combined with the strains put on infrastructure and other resources by rapid economic growth in recent years, India has been unable to provide sufficient public services. This has resulted in issues such as chronic shortages of power and degradation of facilities. In the healthcare field, there are many degraded utilities at the hospitals, which cause inefficient energy usage. The administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated the government will take the lead in putting social infrastructure in place and has made enhancement of healthcare services one of the priority policies. With the movement, the Indian Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has announced the concept of Green AIIMS in June 2014 which aims to increase the number of green hospitals in India by transforming the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (“AIIMS”) a green hospital, and showcasing it as the first India’s premier medical facility. To make this concept a reality, the demonstration project is envisaged as being undertaken at the New Delhi campus of AIIMS, and its preliminary survey will be conducted in April through October 2015.

The currently expected activities of the demonstration project are as follows. The actual activities are scheduled to be determined in more detail following the preliminary survey.

(1) “Install or upgrade to efficiency equipment realizing energy-efficient hospital facilities”

To reduce fuel use in the diesel generators used during times of power-shortage and shift peak power demand, the demonstration project will optimize the operational control of hospital facilities, including existing equipment, by installing a solar power generation system, storage batteries, highly-efficient air conditioning and more. Even at times when energy supply is unstable, there will be a stable power supply for hospital operations. The aim is to reduce the amount of energy used by managing and controlling energy throughout the entire hospital.

(2) “Build a data center with superior energy-saving performance”

AIIMS foresees that the amount of healthcare data it accumulates will swell to burgeoning proportions going forward. The demonstration project will efficiently use and manage this immense amount of data by installing a storage server and IT system equipped with Hitachi’s energy-saving technologies and solutions. At the same time, it will demonstrate any effective savings in the amount of energy consumed by IT systems. Moreover, by introducing a digital healthcare data management system will also support enhanced hospital and diagnostic efficiency.

(3) “Maximize Energy Savings through Optimal Operation of Utility Facilities”

With the aim of optimal operation of utility facilities, the hospital operations database derived from the hospital’s IT systems will be connected to an energy management system to enable forecasts of the hospital’s estimated daily energy use, based on accumulated data and the state of hospital operations. Optimizing operation of facilities will maximize energy savings.

Through the Social Innovation Business which includes the solutions targeting the healthcare industry as well as integrating cutting-edge IT and infrastructure technologies, Hitachi will contribute to the medium- and long- term development of India society. CCI Newswire
