Mumbai, March 15, 2025: This year’s Holi is special for Navsare’s family from Dhule, Maharashtra; it brought hope for healthy future as the patriarch of the family received a second lease of life. Suresh Navsare (43), a sub-inspector with Maharashtra Police, who was suffering from prolonged Liver issue got relief on March 5th 2025 as his daughter, Mayuri (18), donated a part of her Liver to enable his recovery. The success of the surgery was celebrated by the duo as the daughter, who was discharged a few days ago, marked this new beginning by feeding her father his favourite Holi delicacy, puran poli. The family shared these moments at Fortis Mulund Hospital where her father is recovering, and thanked the expert team, led by Dr Vikram Raut, Head-Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai.

Suresh was diagnosed with Ascites (where fluid accumulates in the abdomen and causes swelling) about five months ago. He was diagnosed with autoimmune Liver failure and was recommended to undergo a Liver transplant as his organ had started to rapidly fail. In autoimmune Liver failure, the body’s immune system gets triggered and starts attacking the organ, leading to  its failure. The family was baffled as Suresh led a healthy life devoted to caring for his family; the only other ailment he ever had was Diabetes. The sole symptom that came to their mind was a swelling in his feet that they had attributed to Diabetes; even after urging him to get it checked out by a doctor, Suresh had not paid heed. As the sole breadwinner of a family of three, he did not like sparing much time or effort in caring for himself.

Even before the family had a chance to come to terms with Suresh’s Liver failure diagnosis, his daughter Mayuri made up her mind. This 18-year-old was determined to be there for her father as he had been there for her and her family. “My father has worked his whole life for us and when the doctors informed us he needed a new Liver, I knew what I had to do. I am so happy with how it turned out for him. Today when I saw my father recovering, I couldn’t stop myself from feeding him his favourite puran poli and watched him smile as we celebrated Holi together; the only thought that crossed my mind was that this sweet treat will mark the beginning of something auspicious for us.”

Talking about the transplant, Dr Vikram Raut, Head-Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai, said, “After detailed evaluation, Suresh was found to have elevated autoimmune markers. In autoimmune conditions, the patient’s immune system becomes dysregulated and attacks their own Liver cells. This condition often remains silent for years, but if diagnosed early, it can be treated with medication. However, Suresh had already developed advanced Liver failure and hence needed an organ transplant. In the last 15 years, his Liver cells had been destroyed by his own hyper immunity. He underwent an organ  transplant as his Liver disease was advanced and not responding to medical management. Mayuri has a healthy Liver and no co-morbidities, so her Liver will regenerate in six months-time, and it will not stop her from living her life to its fullest. After a Liver transplant, recipients have a life expectancy of 65 percent, even 10 years post transplant. Mayuri’s brave decision is an example for the community, one that will hopefully help build more positive conversations around live Liver donations.”

While the transplant was a success and Suresh is recovering, as future care, he will have to be on immunosuppressants. Mayuri, since her discharge on March 12, 2025, has steadily recovered, and her family members are grateful & happy to see her getting back to her original self soon after this major surgery. She is looking forward to resuming college education so one day she can achieve her dream of becoming court stenographer.
