-Awareness for the International Yoga Day (June 21st)
The United Nations declared June 21 as the ‘International Day of Yoga’ in the year 2014 after Indian PM Narendra Modi called for the day to be adopted as a global celebration of yoga, an ancient practice which began in India more than 5,000 years ago. Yoga is said it be the power to bring out the human potential to the fullest. Today yoga is practiced across the world and in various forms. ‘International Day of Yoga’ is celebrated aiming to raise the further awareness of its many health benefits.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr K.S. Lakshmi, Sr. Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology, Minimal Access GI Surgery & Bariatric Surgery from Gleneagles Global Hospitals says, “Doing Yoga is extremely helpful in toning up back and chest muscles. Post bariatric surgery, we advise our patients to practice Yoga on a regular basis to keep themselves healthy and fit.”
For those undergoing the recovery process post surgery, finding a comfortable exercise alternative can be a challenge. Yoga is a very good alternative, offering an easy, comfortable option that can be practiced anywhere, from the gym to your living room, with nothing but a mat.
Although many people don’t realize, yoga is an integral element from recovering post surgery. Researchers have well established in western science that a poor exercise regime can contribute to the development of a wide variety of diseases, including Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and some cancers. Modifying the diet can, in turn, improve health, reduce the need for medications, and in some cases reverse all signs of diseases.
Many patients find the benefits of yoga after bariatric surgery to be highly gratifying. Easy on joints while still providing a whole body workout, yoga can develop muscles, enhance flexibility, and build confidence, helping patient achieve the body he / she always wanted. With the ability to relieve physical pain and mental stress, yoga can relax your mind, body, and spirit with regular practice. Best of all, yoga can be practiced by anyone of any level of physical fitness, making it easy to get started at any experience level.
