Indian Spinal Injury Centre and Spinal Cord Society organizes 15th edition of its ISSICON conference at Le Meridien from 26 September; focuses on complex spine trauma

New Delhi, September 16, 2015: Medical experts, researchers and doctors from as many as 10 countries will come together for a major international conference in the capital to deliberate over latest advances in the field of spinal injury treatment, including the new possibilities being offered by the use of stem cell transplant to induce spinal cord repair.

International Spine and Spinal Injuries Conference (ISSICON) is organized annually, one year at New Delhi & the following year in another part of the country in an effort to bridge the gap in professional development opportunities for health professionals involved in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) management. The 15th edition is being organized as a collaboration between Indian Spinal Injuries Centre and Spinal Cord Society .Taking into account the surge in trauma cases, the conference this year is also focusing on “Complex Spine Trauma” that has affected many lives and families.

The two day main conference, “ISSICON 2015” will be held at Le Meridien, New Delhi on September 26-27, 2015. Four Pre conference workshops for nurses, therapists, psychologists and physiotherapists about the latest developments in the field of spinal cord injuries will be held at ISIC on 25th September. The conference will be inaugurated by Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Hon’ble Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Government of India. Shri Lov Verma Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Government of India will be the Guest of Honour

The conference will primarily revolve around the developments and achievements in treating spinal injuries. One of the outcomes of the conference will be the six position statements discussing various controversial issues pertaining to SCI management on which there is still no consensus internationally. In the absence of guidelines, health professionals generally got confused on the appropriate approach. The consensus statements will help bring clarity on the issue. They will be compiled after an extensive literature review on the topic and discussion amongst selected experts. This will be followed by an open house discussion on the during the conference to finalize the position statement. The first statement will highlight on the role of methylprednisolone in spinal injury management while the second statement will discuss the importance of having protocol for Radiological evaluation of SCI. Another statement will focus around the ideal time at which surgery should be conducted in case of a spinal injury, while the fourth statement will explore role of re useable catheters in bladder management in emerging countries. Focusing on the advances that can be introduced for Asian population, statement five willlook at the role of Thromboprophylaxis in acute SCI and the statement six will explore the need to come out with regulations for use of Cellular transplantation for human SCI.

Most of the SCI cases are caused due to preventable causes with road accidents being one of the main causes. Spinal Cord Society believes that there is an urgent need to disseminate and share information regarding state-of-the-art technology and recent advances in management of spinal injury and other spinal ailments. In the 15th edition of ISSICON, the endeavour will be to have a communion of the medical and paramedical professionals from around the globe and particularly those from developing countries to jointly focus on the growing concern.
