Karnataka plans five new super speciality hospitals

Govt may rope in HSCC to assess cost of hospitals

Bangalore, September 16, 2014 – Karnataka is planning to build five new super speciality hospitals – one each at all revenue divisions in the State. The places identified are Gulbarga, Mysore, Belgaum, Hubli and Bellary.

“The State Government is ready to fund three hospitals while the other two will be taken up under Central Government funding,” Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil told BusinessLine. The Government is planning to avail itself of the services of HSCC, a public sector hospital consultancy company, to assess the value of setting up each hospital. The government has land in all the cities.

“The Government does not want to go through the public private partnership (PPP) route to build hospitals. Any PPP will have cost. So, we want to do it ourselves,” Patil said.

But it is the manpower, equipment and building which will bear the cost.

New colleges

The Government also plans to set up a unit of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in all the revenue divisions. Patil said, “We recently constructed one in Mysore for RS.150 crore. Since the land was ours, we were able to control the cost. Similarly, we plan to replicate it in Hubli, Gulbarga, Bellary and Raichur.” Talking about building new medical colleges, he said “The three colleges under construction at Bagalkot, Tumkur and Chitradurga are nearing completion. In a year’s time, we plan to go for Medical Council of India approval.” Similarly, medical colleges at Chickaballapur, Haveri and Yadgir are expected to be completed by 2016-17, he added.
