Kshitij`19 – World Deaf Day Carnival

New Delhi, September 29, 2019: Hearing impairment refers to a condition where people suffer from partial or total inability to hear. The prevalence of deafness in India is fairly significant and around 20 lakh children present have this inability.

Kshitij, SVKM’s Mithibai College’s International Intercollegiate Cultural Festival and JOSH Foundation, an organisation focused on supporting children with hearing impairment by providing hearing aids to over 1000 underprivileged children and establishing special schools for them, organised a Carnival for over 150 children with Hearing Impairment from various Schools for the Deaf across Mumbai on the 27th of September, 2019 that is World Deaf Day. These children engaged in various interactive activities and games which were organised by Team Kshitij. Keeping in mind a feeling of goodwill, we gifted 30 Hearing Aids worth Rs. 10,00,000 to these children with hearing impairment. This was possible because of a very generous donation made by Shri. Bharat M. Sanghvi.

After the games and various other activities, all the students present there engaged in a peaceful Yoga session. In order to spread awareness about the ill effects of honking, the formation of a Human Chain of over 350 students, comprising of both, the children with hearing impairment and the students of Team Kshitij was carried out in the Juhu area.

As a special add on to the event, Johnny Lever, one of India’s most loved comedians and the super talented actor Rohit Roy were present there. They were there to spend quality time with these children with hearing impairment, giving them the time of their lives. They were also a part of the Human Chain with the students, displaying their down to Earth demeanour, showing that they care about the society and that have a heart of gold.

The Principal of Mithibai College, Dr. Rajpal Shripat Hande said, “The handicap of deafness is not in the ear, it’s in the mind. Team Kshitij and JOSH Foundation carried out this initiative to provide the children with hearing impairment with a feeling of inclusion and acceptance. The students of Team Kshitij felt an amplified sentiment of benevolence which will stay with them for the years to come, shaping them into better individuals. I felt overwhelmed while looking over this entire event as I got to witness the change in the way of acceptance of people carried out by the youth.”

We were honoured when Mr. Johnny Lever said, “I have seen children with hearing impairment face a lot of social stigma and I respect them for putting up a commendable fight against the same. When I got to know that Team Kshitij and JOSH Foundation were organising a carnival for them, I felt a sense of relief because there is some hope from the youth. I support Team Kshitij’s want to do something for the society from time to time and I hope they continue carrying out activities related to the same.”
