The Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, organized conference aims to cover latest advancements like Robotics, Navigation techniques in knee surgery available in the country. The hands-on conference covers vital aspects of partial or unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and knee preservation techniques like high tibial osteotomy (HTO) application in treating knee osteoarthritis.
New Delhi, May 11th 2018,: A major hands-on conference on partial or unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and high tibial osteotomy (HTO) was held at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. The day-long conference was evenly spread into 6 academic sessions covering all important aspects of UKR and HTO. Around 120 people attended the conference which discussed the latest advancements like robotics and navigation in the sphere of knee surgery.
Inaugurating the conference by Dr. Sudhir K Kapoor, HOD-Orthopaedics & Chief of Ortho Oncology, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi who was present at the event as the Chief Guest.
The conference aimed to deliver a 360-degree perspective on the ways to diagnose unicompartmental disease, history of osteotomy, latest surgical techniques and challenges associated with it.
“The conference is meant to bring together the greatest minds in the world of Indian knee surgery together in order to promote exchange of ideas, new advancements in procedures and techniques and wisdom from individual experiences on to a common platform. Unicompartmental knee replacement is a well-known and evolving procedure for treating osteoarthritis and so is high tibial osteotomy for knee arthrosis. As responsible healthcare providers, the surgeons and medical practitioners need to be aware about all the evolving aspects in the field and the exercise has been a successful attempt in that direction. We intend to bring more occasions for various experts to come together and create platforms for such discourses to take place”, says Dr.Vivek Mahajan, Consultant Joint Replacement Surgeon, Indian Spinal Injuries Center (ISIC), New Delhi, India
As a part of the scientific agenda, a series of evidence-based case study presentations, didactic lectures, training modules and panel discussions took place involving over 100 members of the medical fraternity from reputed Indian and International healthcare organizations.
During knee replacement surgery, damaged bone and cartilage is resurfaced with metal and plastic components. In unicompartmental knee replacement, only a portion of the knee is resurfaced. This procedure is an alternative to total knee replacement for patients whose disease is limited to just one area of the knee. Because a partial knee replacement is done through a smaller incision, patients usually spend less time in the hospital and return to normal activities sooner than total knee replacement patients. This surgery is routinely done at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre using latest techniques like computer navigation.
High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is another widely performed procedure in Indian Spinal Injuries Centre to treat knee arthrosis. Studies on HTO report good long-term results with a correct patient selection and a precise surgical technique. Some issues like how to make a choice between opening and closing wedge tibial osteotomy, the type of fixation, the comparison with unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and whether HTO significantly affects a subsequent total joint replacement, were discussed in detail by profound faculty members at the conference.
Across the international healthcare industry, more than 100 specialists from the fields of UKR and HTO; research scholars, physical medicine and rehabilitation professionals; and orthopedic surgeons attended the event as faculty, guiding many others in respective fields.
