Metropolis Healthcare reveals 40.5 percent of 1.5 lakh Delhi Residents test positive for Pre-Diabetes or Diabetes

Results based on 1,57,531 samples tested from Delhi NCR region

New Delhi, September 16, 2016: Metropolis Healthcare Ltd, a leading chain of diagnostic labs today revealed that 40.5% of the over 1.5 lakh samples collected from Delhi NCR residents tested positive for Pre-Diabetic and Diabetic factors. The research is based on blood samples submitted by patients aged between 0-80+ years. Almost 20% of the samples from the age group 0-10 years tested positive, with a higher frequency in males. This means that 1 sample in every 5 samples was either Pre-Diabetic or Diabetic. A total of 34% patients who tested positive were from the age group of 30- 70 years.

In a percentage analysis of the overall samples, an increasing trend with progression in age was noticed. 19.42% of the samples were found positive for Diabetes Mellitus whereas 21.01% were found positive for Pre-Diabetes condition. Despite more female blood samples, the results revealed that males were seen at a marginally higher risk for diabetes as compared to females. While a total of 35.5% women tested positive for Diabetes Mellitus and Pre-Diabetes condition, positive results for men were much higher at almost 47%. The analysis was conducted on samples for Fasting Blood Glucose by Metropolis Healthcare’s Delhi Laboratory over a period of five years.

Dr. Geeta Chopra, Chief Pathologist and Lab In-Charge said, “India is often known as the diabetes capital of the world. According to latest estimates of the World Health Organization, the number of Indians with diabetes is projected to balloon to 101.2 million in the next 15 years. While there is significant evidence that supports a range of interventions to improve diabetes outcomes, early detection and diagnosis of diabetes followed by self-management are important elements for preventing and controlling diabetes. It is absolutely necessary for people to do intensive lifestyle modifications, especially in the cities & develop healthy diet habits to prevent Diabetes in the population. Regular Health checks & regular blood glucose monitoring is absolutely necessary for Glycemic control and prevention of complications of Diabetes”.

India has been witnessing an alarming rise in incidence of diabetes according to the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries. Diabetes is a complex, chronic illness requiring continuous medical care with multifactorial risk-reduction strategies beyond glycaemic control. On- going patient self-management education and support are critical to preventing acute complications and reducing the risk of long-term complications. Un-monitored prevalence of diabetes also results in increased risk of vascular complications like cardiovascular, renal, neural and visual disorders which are related to the duration of the disease.
