Newborn baby boy Manan suffering from multi-organ dysfunction syndrome saved by Doctors of Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road

New Delhi, December 02,  2023 :   A team led by Dr. Nitu Mundhra, Consultant Neonatologist treated a newborn admitted after a few hours of birth with multiorgan dysfunction syndrome and was discharged successfully on day 27 (12^th October 2023) of life on full breastfeeds and is now thriving well.

 A couple residing in Bhayander gave birth to 37 37-week 2.3 kg male baby by normal delivery on 15th September. Baby had passed meconium (stools) inside the mother’s womb and aspirited it leading to a complication called Meconium Aspiration Syndrome where the stools infiltrate the lung of the Baby. Baby initially had severe difficulty in breathing leading to low oxygen levels in blood. Owing to his worsening condition he was shifted to Wockhardt Neonatal Intensive Care, MIRACLE.

Dr Nitu Mundhra, Consultant Neonatologist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said “The baby had multiorgan failure on admission. He had severe shortness of breath. Despite on very high ventilator requirement (oxygen requirement of hundred percent). He had a life-threatening severe Pulmonary hemorrhage at admission (a condition where the chances of death are very high).”

The baby had a platelet count as low as 11,000 and has coagulopathy with high INR where the blood is unable to clot inside the body. His kidneys were failing and liver markers were deranged. Infant infective parameters (CRP and PCT) were sky-high and he was in severe shock. He also had persistent pulmonary hypertension as a newborn. A condition where the heart pressures are high, and there is Intra Cardiac Shunting leading the patient to not purify his blood. He also had an episode of seizure.

Since the baby was admitted in a critical condition with multiple problems, we started with a systematic approach and addressed each problem aggressively as this kind of fragile baby does not have much time and conditions were life-threatening, we started with multiple modalities of treatment including advanced ventilation, a baby could be retrieved and was able to come out of all support and ventilator, oxygen within seven days. After that, we continued the supportive treatment and antibiotics. We started the baby on a feeding and kept the baby with the mother in step down NICU Unit for the continuation of treatment. The mother was trained in KMC, early intervention therapy, and breastfeeding and finally discharged the baby on day 27 of life on full breast milk and the mother was confident about caring for the baby at home.
