Now, a rack for generic drugs in private chemist shops

New Delhi, June 14, 2018: Soon you could see cheaper generic drugs being stocked in separate racks in private chemist shops.

To ease woes, in a scenario where patients pay through their nose for buying drugs, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued instructions to all State drug controllers to ensure that private retail chemist shops have separate shelves or racks to make generic medicines available according to Businessline.

The matter was under deliberation with the Drug Consultatie Committee and Drug Technical Advisory Board for some time now. “It has been decided that every retail outlet should provide a separate shelf/rack reserved exclusively for stocking generic medicines in the licensed premises separated from other medicines, which shall be visible to the consumers,” said S Eswara Reddy, Drugs Controller General of India.

The Central Government through it’s 3,000 Jan Aushadhi stores provides cheaper drugs to patients.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda had earlier in the week said, “680 crore worth drugs were made available to 73 lakh patients through Jan Aushadhi stores and lead to savings of up to 374 crore for the patients”.
