Psychiatrist and Artiste of Bengaluru origin Ramya Mohan shortlisted for a National Award in the UK (RCPsych Psychiatric Communicator of the year 2019)

Bengaluru, Septembe 07, 2019: Hailing originally from Bengaluru an alumna of Bangalore medical college,Dr.Ramya Mohan, FRCPsych is one of the three shortlisted nominees globally in 2019 in the category Psychiatric Communicator of the year.  The RCPsych(Royal College of PsychiatristsUK ) Awards mark the highest level of achievement in world psychiatry. Dr.Ramya Mohan, a global mental health pioneer,  was also awarded a Royal College Fellowship award in 2018 for her contributions to world psychiatry- her citation read “Dr.Ramya Mohan is a global pioneer integrating Neuroscience, Mental Health and the Creative Arts , including music, fine arts , literature and oratory through clinical practice , large community development events and projects , media awareness work and her acclaimed music- based therapeutic technique CAPE : Creative Arts for Processing Emotions.

Dr.Ramya works across the UK and Bengaluru currently and is actively involved in community development in India, working to increase awareness of mental health in children and young people and making evidence-based, quality mental health accessible to all. A mother of two, she has handled many complex cases in India too as a part of her practice.

Ramya moved to the UK and completed her training in General Psychiatry at the South London and the Maudsley NHS Hospitals Trust, a premier institute for mental health globally. She was one of the youngest doctors to complete the MRCPsych (UK), arguably the most difficult medical post-graduate exam in the UK. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, she completed her sub-specialization in Developmental Psychiatry (Psychiatry of children, adolescents, young people and families) at the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London, UK.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists awards for 2019 cover 17 categories, to recognise the stellar work being done by individuals and teams working in mental health care.The winners will be announced at a glittering RCPsych Awards Ceremony at the Royal College in November 2019.

This shortlisted nomination for an RCPsych award is to recognize the efforts of an individual or a group of individuals who have championed awareness and understanding of psychiatric and/or mental health issues, through public engagement such as media work, promotion or education in schools and in the community, or via social media.

This person or group of individuals can come from any background, including psychiatry, other medical disciplines, the media, charity sector, politics, education, or industry.

It should demonstrate that the nominee has:

  1. a) Challenged negative stereotypes and perceptions of mental illness.
  2. b) Conveyed information about mental health in a creative and accessible way.
  3. c) Demonstrated first-class communication skills.
  4. d) Raised awareness of psychiatric issues in a positive manner.
  5. e) Promoted the importance of mental health in society.
