The World Congress of Dermatology will be the largest medical convention ever to be hosted in Singapore, its first South-east Asian destination
Singapore, 25 July 2019: Singapore has been chosen by Members of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) to host the 25th World Congress of Dermatology in 2023. It will be the largest medical convention ever hosted in the Republic, and will attract around 15,000 local and foreign delegates and generate over S$28 million in tourism receipts.
The World Congress of Dermatology is one of the largest global dermatology conventions in the world and is held under the auspices of the ILDS. The event in 2023 also marks the first time that it is held in South-east Asia.
“We are honoured that Singapore has been chosen to host the World Congress of Dermatology in 2023. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) will work with the event organisers and all other partners to ensure that the event proceeds smoothly and provides an enriching and meaningful experience for all the delegates,” said Mr Keith Tan, Chief Executive of STB.
ILDS members voted for the Republic to be the destination for the next quadrennial meeting over five other cities. Singapore’s bid – made on behalf of South-east Asia was spearheaded by the Dermatological Society of Singapore (DSS), with support from public agencies and industry stakeholders such as STB, as well as the League of ASEAN Dermatological Societies and other regional dermatological societies.
“We are delighted that ILDS Members and dermatologists from around the world will be meeting in Singapore in 2023. The Dermatological Society of Singapore presented exciting plans for the 25th World Congress of Dermatology and we already look forward to collaborating with the President of the 25th World Congress of Dermatology in Singapore and the local organising team in order to prepare an outstanding World Congress of Dermatology in 2023,” announced Professor Lars French, ILDS president.
The ILDS has over 190 member societies from more than 80 countries, including Singapore, and represents over 200,000 dermatologists.
Held every four years, the World Congress of Dermatology has a 130-year history. The previous Congress was held in Milan, Italy last month, where the international dermatology community came together to learn and exchange knowledge and skills. Please see Annex A for more information.
Themed Dermatology Beyond Borders, the 25th World Congress of Dermatology will be held in July 2023. The theme underlines the DSS’s vision for the Congress to expand the boundaries of dermatology and enhance cooperation across borders. Delegates will have opportunities to share regional expertise in clinical areas and research, alongside patient and community engagement. Among other programmes, they will also be able to attend plenary and breakout sessions, workshops and potentially, site visits to dermatological facilities.
DSS will offer scholarships to young trainees, doctors and delegates from low- income and lower-middle income countries to participate in the Congress. Part of the budget surplus from the Congress will be channeled towards training and exchange programmes, particularly in South and South-east Asia, thus developing regional dermatology further.
Professor Roy Chan, President of the 25th World Congress of Dermatology and Senior Consultant and Medical Adviser at the National Skin Centre, said: “We are honoured and excited to host the World Congress of Dermatology, and look forward to welcoming the global dermatology community to Singapore in 2023. The Congress, themed Dermatology Beyond Borders, will put the spotlight on the dermatology community in Singapore and the region, and spur further development of this field of medicine.”
