Aakash Healthcare’s expert team performed single-stage surgery and guided her recovery with tailored nutrition and rehab.

New Delhi, May 01, 2025: A 15-year-old mentally challenged patient presented at Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka, with acute pain in her right hip.

Upon investigation, initial X-rays revealed a right femoral-neck fracture despite no history of trauma. Blood tests showed critically low calcium and vitamin D levels, linked to poor nutrition and her limited mobility. While in the ICU she received calcium and vitamin D supplementation, but her levels rose slowly and she experienced a seizure. The next day, when she reported pain in her left hip, imaging uncovered a spontaneous left-side femoral-neck fracture.

Once her calcium levels were stabilized, Dr. Bharat Bahre, Senior Consultant & Associate Director, Aakash Healthcare, performed a single-stage internal fixation of both fractures under spinal anesthesia. “Bilateral femoral-neck fractures are rare, most cases occur in elderly patients with osteoporosis or following seizures in those with hypocalcemia. In this young patient, severe calcium deficiency compounded by prolonged immobility led to spontaneous fractures on both sides,” said Dr. Bahre.

Post-surgery, Aakash healthcare’s physiotherapy team began gentle mobilization exercises. Within four weeks, she progressed from assisted standing to walking independently. Nutritionists worked with her family to establish a diet rich in calcium and protein, and she continues on vitamin D and calcium supplements at home.

Her recovery has been outstanding as she walks without assistance and reports no pain or limp. “Watching her take those first free steps was incredibly rewarding,” Dr. Bahre added. “This outcome highlights how integrated care; orthopaedics, ICU management, nutrition, and rehab can dramatically change a young life.”

By Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Director, Department of Orthopaedics and joint replacement, also the Managing Director, Aakash Healthcare, said, “This case is a true reflection of our multidisciplinary approach, where every department from emergency to rehab came together for one goal: giving this young girl a second chance at life. We believe every patient, no matter their challenges, deserves the opportunity to heal, thrive, and live with dignity.”

Aakash Healthcare remains committed to holistic patient care. Regular follow-ups will monitor her bone health and overall well-being, ensuring she continues on the path to full strength and independence.
