The Illustrated Guide to Living with Diabetes in India’, a Comprehensive, Reliable Self-management Guide for People with Diabetes in India is all Set for Launch; Available for Pre-order on Flipkart.com

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Thursday, April 04, 2013 — (Business Wire India) — ‘The Living with Diabetes in India’, 0.5 Million Member Online Community for People with Diabetes Expands Its Reach to Millions Waiting for the Right Guidance

The Illustrated Guide to Living with Diabetes in India is a book authored by The Living with Diabetes in India (LWDI) Community and co-published in India by Popular Prakashan. It will be available for pre-order on www.flipkart.com from April 3, 2013. The LWDI community is the world’s largest, most trusted online community of diabetics, caregivers and healthcare professionals supporting diabetics in India. It aims to provide practical and reliable information on winning over diabetes through this book that can serve as a practical guide to self-manage diabetes.

To manage diabetes, one needs to take several decisions throughout the day to better manage blood glucose levels. However, it is practically impossible to have a doctor with us 24 hours a day and hence one needs to learn more about diabetes in order to self-manage it. The book is based on the most reliable and accurate medical information from around the world. It is a culmination of painstaking work carried out over the past 12 months by a team of medical writers, artists and diabetologists, and is intended to serve as a one-stop, reliable yet practical guide to self-manage diabetes in easy-to-understand language.

Praful Akali, the editor of the book and founder-member of the LWDI community said, “We were surprised to learn that there is no single source of practical yet reliable information for people with diabetes to better manage their condition.” An IIM alumnus and head of one of the leading medical communications agencies in the country, Praful added, “Based on the latest peer-reviewed scientific information and with inputs from the country’s leading doctors, nutritionists, counsellors and fellow diabetics, the book promises to marry scientific credibility with practicality.”

The book is co-published in India by leading book publishers, Popular Prakashan. Manish Purohit, CEO, Popular Prakashan, said, “As a publisher, we have seen many books that claim to educate people on various health issues. However, this book is unique in its engaging content and in bringing together the reliable information in such simple language. We are happy with our partnered association with a book of this genre and to lend our support to the cause of patient education for diabetes management.”

Dr. Debasis Basu, medical coordinator, LWDI said, “As genetics and lifestyle have conspired heavily to inflict an epidemic of diabetes in our subcontinent with approximately 67 million people affected with diabetes in India in 2013, we need to focus our attention on changing our lifestyles to manage the disease. This guide will help you believe that if good and right care is taken, even with diabetes, you are the master of your own life.”

‘The Healthy People 2010’ objective regarding diabetes education is that “60% of people with diabetes should receive formal diabetes education” but in India, we are far from achieving even a small fraction of that objective. With plenty of information available, it can be rather confusing and stressful to make the right choice to take the right decision. The Illustrated Guide to Living with Diabetes in India – developed by people with diabetes, for people with diabetes – promises to help millions in India live healthy, happy lives even with diabetes.

About Living with Diabetes in India: The ‘Living with Diabetes in India’ community on Facebook was founded in 2010 with an objective to build a common platform for all the patients living with diabetes and their family members. With over half a million members, the community-comprising diabetics, caregivers for diabetics and healthcare professionals supporting diabetics-is the world’s largest, most trusted online community for people with diabetes.
