The regenerative medicines has revolutionized the treatment of heart disease and neurodegenerative disorder – Mr. Ketan Zota, Director, Zota Healthcare

Bengaluru, May 04, 2016: A healthy lifestyle is the best medicine that everyone should consume. The advancement of technology with every passing day results in growth of every industry possible. One of the rapid growing industries is Pharmaceutical Industry. With immense amount of research and ceaseless efforts to develop pharmaceutical formulations, a healthy lifestyle has now become affordable. The development of regenerative medicines in the Pharmaceutical world has revolutionized the treatment of heart disease and neurodegenerative disorder. Regenerative medicine is a branch of translational research (findings from basic science to enhance human health and well-being) in tissue engineering and molecular biology. The usage of regenerative medicine solves the organ donor shortage problem, incompatible transplant and rejection, and completely restores damaged muscles, tendons and other tissues. The Drug discovery also results in cost and time reduction, limited use of animals, development of new biological tools and technologies, which becomes an added advantage in expansion of Healthcare industry.

The clinical need for tissue and organ replacement increases each year and the estimated cost of these transplantations crosses billion annually. The key research done about regenerative medicine was provide a starter kit that comprised of various proteins, fibres or cells or to clone extra copies of the semi-specialized stem cells that are already found in adult patients and to allow the body to take over from there. This broad research area has several main focuses such as Cellular Therapies, Gene Therapies and Tissue Engineering. This medicine is referred to the above mentioned group of biomedical approaches & clinical therapies that may involve the use of stem cells. Examples include the injection of stem cells or progenitor cells obtained through Directed differentiation (cell therapies); the induction of regeneration by biologically active molecules administered alone or as a secretion by infused cells (immunomodulation therapy); and transplantation of in vitro grown organs and tissues (tissue engineering).

One of the main advantage to the Healthcare industry is that these medicines help you to know the cause and progression of the disease, which leads to the development of better and effective treatment for multiple sclerosis and similar other treatments. The development of novel treatment and novel drug delivery system to enhance natural cell repair and genetic material formation has increased the use of regenerative medicine and has also been a reliable procedure for the Healthcare industry. The extra help allows the body to re-grow tissues of the type or in the amount that it normally could not do by itself. Already such self-healing treatments have somewhat rejuvenated a few patients’ ailing hearts and helped surgeons repair injured muscles. Regenerative medicine is a promise of research of medical field which can give a hope to a person to regain his amputated leg or renew sections of the brain lost due to Alzheimer’s disease. Such research does not only assure betterment in Quality of patients’ life but also increases the possibility of treating the previously untreated injuries.

As a coin has two sides similarly within all these advantages there are certain setbacks. Unethical practices and use of regenerative medicines and stem cells are increasing and this might be the reason behind the use of unproven regenerative medicine can cause serious damage to the body and can be fatal. “Use of regenerative medicines and stem cells can change the entire outlook of individual healthcare and ecosystems. More the research and practice, more is the possibility of eliminating the drawbacks that Pharmaceutical and healthcare industry is witnessing,” says Mr. Ketan Zota, the Director of Zota Healthcare Limited. Mr. Zota also said that, “Government should also take the initiative and support for the development and advancement required in this area of science.” A ‘lawful’ support does not only mean legal assistance, it can also promote such a vast subject of development. Drafting of proper and clear guidelines for the use of such medicines would indeed be a great move to widen the reach of regenerative medicines. Although much progress has been made in the field of regenerative medicine with the advent of stem cell therapies, yet every member of the Healthcare industry is trying to figure out the stem cell combinations that could potentially be used for specifically targeted organs.
