VS Hospitals conducts Walkathon to create awareness on cancer

Chennai, February 05, 2020: VS Hospitals, which works with the motto of ‘Care, Cure, Compassion’, conducted a Walkathon today to commemorate World Cancer Day-2020.VS Walkathon was an initiative to raise awareness on cancer. Flagged off by Mr.AmpaPalaniappan, Managing Director, Ampa Skywalk, it saw participation of people from various walks of life, representing different age groups and professions.

The Walkathon started from VS Hospitals, Advanced Cancer Care, East Spurtank Road, Chetpet at, passed through Casa Major Road, Tamil Salai and PT School, Egmore and concluded at VS Hospitals, East Spurtank Road.The event served its purpose, as it actively created awareness on cancer among people of the city. This is as part of many on-going initiatives by VS Hospitals towards building a healthy society.

Prof Dr. S. Subramanian Chairman and Managing Director, VS Group of Hospitals, Dr. S. Sundar, Senior Consultant Joint Replacement & Tumour Surgeon and Medical Director, VS Group of Hospitals and Mr.Muthu Subramanian, Executive Director, VS Group of Hospitals participated in this awareness walkathon.

In India, the estimated number of people living with cancer is around 2.25 million. Every year, over 11,57,294 lakh new cancer patients are registered, while cancer-related deaths stand at 7,84,821. Mortality due to tobacco use in India is estimated at upwards of 3500 persons every day. Studies show one woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes in India.

Prof Dr. S. Subramanian, Chairman & Managing Director, VS Group of Hospitals, said, “Though cancer is a life threatening disease, it can be prevented with some changes in the lifestyle. Also, cancer can be cured if it is detected at early stage.”

He added: “With this Walkathon, we intended to create awareness on cancer and the myths surrounding it. I am happy that the event saw huge participation and we were able to achieve our mission.”

On Sunday (February 2, 2020), VS Hospitals, in association with Naturals, conducted a hair donation drive. Since hair loss is the most distressing and feared side effect of chemotherapy performed for cancer patients, the initiative was aimed at collecting hair from volunteers.

VS Blood Bank also conducted a blood donation drive for cancer patients on Sunday, as part of VS Hospitals’ World Cancer Day-2020 events.
