New Delhi, May 16, 2016: Hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure of a person rises to 140/90. It can go upto 180/120, which is considered a very severe condition, and should be controlled as soon as possible. There are a lot of people who think that they cannot gym or workout, just because they have hypertension. Hypertension patients should infact make sure they exercise regularly, because one of the causes of hypertension is lack of a healthy lifestyle. Gymming 5 days a week helps the hypertension patients to control the blood pressure. On this Hypertension day, Dr Vaijhnath Dhapse tells us about some tips for hypertension patients who want to gym.

  • The workout should be of moderate intensity. While doing the strength training, the weight should not go above the heart level. Strength training also regularises blood pressure in the long run. Other exercises can include jogging, squats, pull ups, bicep curls, seated chest press etc.
  • The hypertension patients can exercise for 30-60 minutes in one session, keeping in mind that the session is not high intensity.
  • The exercises should be combined with a good diet, which has less sugar, and is high in carbohydrates. Regular exercise helps release stress, which helps in controlling blood pressure.
  • Regular aerobics is also very helpful in maintaining the blood pressure levels. You can use treadmill or elliptical trainer when you are at the gym. However, you have to make sure you tell your trainer that you are a hypertension patient, so that the exercises are not high in intensity.
  • Apart from aerobics, yoga and pilates are also helpful in reducing stress and boost fitness levels.
  • No matter what exercise you choose, you have to make sure that you start the exercises slowly and warm up before you start working out. The intensity of your workout should be increased slowly and gradually, and it should always remain moderate in intensity.
  • When you exercise, you must ensure that you do not hold your breath, or it might increase your blood pressure levels. Make sure you breathe continuously and pause on the exercise in case you stop feeling dizzy.
