Prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of Cancer in General was discussed, with special emphasis on Blood and Colorectal Cancer.

Kolkata, April 01, 2018: The Parkway Cancer Centre, Singapore hosted an interactive session at the city’s newest spot, The Salt House, in association with Can Hope (New Delhi) and Parkway Hospitals (Singapore). The session traced discussions on the ‘Ghost of all Diseases’- CANCER, with eminent speakers like Dr. Colin Phipps Diong(Consultant Haematology, Parkway Hospitals, Singapore), Dr. Zee Ying Kiat(Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology, Parkway Hospitals, Singapore) and Dr. A/Pro Mark Wong (Senior Consultant – Robotic, Colorectal & General Surgery, Parkway Hospitals, Singapore).

The session took to educate and clear notions about how immunotherapy, stem-cell transplantation and robotic surgery plays an integral part in cancer prognosis &treatment. In depth understanding of the terror that Adulthood Cancer is, gave way to highlighting the preventive and effective screening measures. The number of Cancer detected patients going abroad for treatment is increasing by the day, and getting a perception and understanding from a Cancer Specialty Centre like Parkway was an enriching experience for all guests.

Discussed during the session, Dr. Zee Ying Kiat (Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology, Parkway Hospitals, Singapore), explained that the important avenues to keep in mind to avoid cancer are- avoiding Tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a diet that are low on saturated fats, being physically active & maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding excessive sunlight, protection against sexually transmitted infections and regular screening for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer. Having said that, he also said that though maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, many times the cause of occurrence of the cancer cannot be traced back.

The session covered an array of topics of general lifestyle as well, including combating constipation (Identifying it and treating it), Functional Constipation (what it is and how it can be treated at an early stage),Ventral Mesh Rectopexy (the entire process of the treatment), Colorectal Cancer (the ideal diet and lifestyle to avoid it) and Piles (knowledge on how to eat right and remedy the disease). Commenting on this event and his  experience on Colorectal Cancer, Dr. A/Pro Mark Wong – Senior Consultant – Robotic, Colorectal & General Surgery said, ‘Colorectal Cancer is one of the most common cancers in India amongst most men and women. We want to raise awareness on this topic- its prevention and treatment. Blood Cancer was the topic to be discussed next, with Dr Phipps giving the audience an understanding of the types of Blood Cancer, how it is diagnosed and the means of treatment. Blood Transfusion, followed by Chemotherapy or Radiation of some form is the way out, though this type of cancer requires the longest stay under observation- which is usually the reason for higher treatment costs. On the topic, Dr. Colin Phipps Consultant Haematology said,’There are many treatments for it and it is important to get the diagnosis correct in time. The symptoms for blood cancer are most difficult to notice and pay heed to, which makes prognosis of Blood Cancer most difficult. Having said that, it’s a myth that blood cancer is difficult to treat – there are specific and targeted treatments of the type blood cancer that is diagnosed, thus it is most important for have undergone correct diagnosis.’
