Panaji, February 09, 2017: (UNI) The Manipal Hospitals today announced its association with National Cancer Grid, under the leadership of Tata Memorial Hospital through which it aims to linkup cancer cases for further study and investigation.
Addressing a press conference at the hospital, Dr Shekhar Salkar, chief of clinical services at Manipal Hospitals, said Manipal Hospital, Goa, is proud to announce its association with National Cancer Grid under the leadership of Tata Memorial Hospital.
Through this approach, Manipal Hospital, Goa, will be able to linkup cases which need further study and investigation, to a group of Oncologists in more than 50 cancer-treating institutions like Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and seek opinion regarding optimal management for patients suffering from cancer.
”This will help patients in Goa to receive optimal treatment based on latest medical research around the world, ensure uniformity in standard of treatment, eliminate the need for patients to travel-long distances for optimal care, pave a way for collaborative research and give shape to a cancer policy in India,” he added.
Dr Jacob George, medical Oncologist of Manipal Hospitals, Goa, said, ”The step to get associated with National Grid is of paramount importance as cancer is expected to be major problem in Goa and India, which the people have to learn to face and tackle. This incidence is likely to increase from one million cases in 2012 to about 1.7 million cases in 2035.
”The ratio of mortality incident of 0.68 in India is much higher than most developed countries where it is about 0.38 per cent. This is essentially due to advanced stage at diagnosis, limited access to uniform and quality cancer care and given up attitude of patients across the spectrum. Through the association of Manipal Hospital, Goa with the National Cancer Grid we wish to provide uniformity and quality in treatment of cancer for the benefits of patients in Goa,” he added.
The Hospital launched a special Cancer Screening Package, which was released at the hands of Ms Hemashri Gadekar and other leaders of a Mahila Self-Help Group. –United News of India
