National Pharmacy Week, (15th – 21st November, 2015)
“Responsible use of Antibiotics Saves Life”

Bengaluru, December 3, 2015: Roorkee College of Pharmacy, Roorkee had celebrated National Pharmacy Week, during November 18-21, 2015. It was inaugurated on November 18, 2014. The theme of this NPW was focus on “Responsible use of Antibiotics Saves Life”. It was mainly stressed on the need to aware the community and budding pharmacists about the role of pharmacists in responsible use of Antibiotics.

Antibiotics are like a double edge sword- of great benefit, if use correctly, but can cause harm if used unwisely. So, it is need of hour to use the Antibiotics very responsibly and as pharmacists are the important member of Healthcare Service Providers, they play very important role in responsible use of antibiotics and pubic should also consider the same. Recent International studies and surveys indicated that Antibiotics abuse or overuse is main concern of today and it contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance that includes the creation of multidrug-resistant bacteria, informally called “super bugs“: relatively harmless bacteria that can develop resistance to multiple antibiotics and cause life-threatening infections.

With this aim, National pharmacy week was celebrated in Roorkee College of Pharmacy, Roorkee. In the celebrations various activities and events were organized by staff and students of the college to motivate the pharmacy professionals as well as public about the theme.

 

Inauguration (November 18, 2015):

The program was inaugurated by Prof(Dr) Surendra Kr Sharma, Ex Chairman, Dept of Pharm Sci., GJUS&T and Dr Aswini Kumar, Managing Trustee along with Dr Naveen Goyal, Director, Roorkee College of Pharmacy. The chief guest of the function emphasized on the role of Pharmacist in public health. He delivered a talk and encouraged the students of Pharmacy for their role in responsible use of Antibiotics.

Dr Vipin Kukkar, Director Research, RCP, staff members and students of college were present during the occasion. In the inauguration, Guests motivated the budding pharmacist to play an important role in the society.

Public Awareness Programs in Schools (November 18-21, 2015):

Roorkee College of Pharmacy also conducted an awareness program in the schools of Roorkee and Haridwar region as a part of NPW celebrations. In this program, four teams of four members each were made to give presentations on the theme during the NPW. The topic covered was Role of Community Pharmacist in Rational Use of Antibiotics.

 

Poster display at Hospitals, Clinics and Chemist shops (November 18-21, 2015):

Since, it is responsibility of pharmacists to aware the patients/community about use of medicines, students of Roorkee College of Pharmacy displayed the posters at various clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and chemist shops.

 

General Health Check Up Camp (November 18, 2015):

One team of B. Pharmacy and M. Pharmacy Students of Roorkee College of Pharmacy, Roorkee organised a General Health Check Up Camp on 18th Nov 2015. In this camp, students performed various health investigations like measurement of weight, BMI calculation, Blood Group Test and advised on right method of use of medicines/antibiotics. During the camp, 115 persons were consulted.

 

PharmaQuiz 2015 (November 19, 2015)::

In a series of activities, A Quiz Competition, PharmaQuiz-2015 was conducted for the D.Pharmacy, B. Pharmacy and M. Pharmacy students. The response was overwhelming for the competition. Dr. Naveen Goyal, Director honoured the Chief Guest Dr. Aswini Kumar, Trustee, RCP Group of Institutions for the event. Chief Guest emphasized on conceptual understanding and alertness of the students in answering the questions in his speech. Apart from appreciating the correct answers, the Quiz Master, Dr Naveen Goyal explained the context and significance of each question. The completion was on powerpoint where quiz master exploited the modern technology to make quiz interesting. The first prize was won by Team A.

 

Rangoli Competition (November 20, 2015):

Rangoli, also known as Kolam, is a folk art from India. Rangoli are decorative designs made on courtyard floors that typically consisting of bright colors. The purpose of Rangoli is decoration and it is thought to bring good luck. A rangoli competition for the students was also organized at the campus during Pharmacy week. Six teams of six students from different batches participated in the competition. The rangoli was judged for Layout, Colour Combination, Theme and overall presentation. Three judges judged separately and awarded marks to each rangoli. The judges appreciated the participants and organizers of competition for their sincere efforts. Finaly, team of B. Pharmacy 1st yr won the competition.

Public awareness rally (November 21, 2015):

A public awareness rally was also organized on 1st day of celebrations to disseminate the message of role of Pharmacist in Public Health. Around 300 students and faculty members participated in the rally. During the rally, leaflets and posters about wisely use of Antibiotics were distributed to the public. About 200 students and staff participated.

 

Valedictory (November 21, 2015):

The Valedictory function was presided by Sh Harendra Garg, Chairman, Sidcul Manufacturers Association Uttarakhand. Dr Anil Sharma, Executive President of Sidcul Manufacturers Association Uttarakhand, Dr Dinesh Pal, DGM, Shreya Pharmaceuticals, Roorkee were special Guest of honour of the valedictory function.

Sh Harendra Garg, in his valedictory address, he exhorted the students to continue to evince the same enthusiasm in learning in their studies and bec ome experts in their field. The feedback by the student participants was very positive and encouraging and they also expressed their desire that such competitions should be an annual feature by the Roorkee College of Pharmacy for the benefit of students. Dr. Naveen Goyal, Director, RCP proposed a vote of thanks.
