New Delhi, March 12, 2017: ‘Strict Regulations in C-Section Procedures for Delivery’ proposed to the Government – Dr. Mahesh Koregol, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVI Fertility, Bengaluru

“In India, the Caesarean section rate has crossed the WHO threshold of 10-15%, while in the US it is much higher (30-35%). I agree with the thought of reducing unnecessary C-section and promoting natural vaginal birth. Natural birth is good for both the mother and the baby. However, this does not hold true in all situations. Maternal and new-born mortality or serious injury to the baby is higher in vaginal deliveries when compared to C-section deliveries.

Moreover, infertile couples opting for IVF invest time and emotions apart from a lot of money to get a successful pregnancy. There are years of failure, depression and anxiety associated with infertility. No risk is affordable which hampers the possibility of delivering a healthy, normal child without any morbidity. It is very important and emotional for such couples to have a healthy baby to take home regardless of the mode of delivery, be it natural or C-section.

While doctors share their professional advice on a case-by-case basis, it is the individual right of the couple to decide what they want. Hence, it should be left to couples for deciding the best method of delivery rather than imposing a particular mode of delivery.”
