New Delhi, Dec 26, 2014 – Continuing its legacy of care for life, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket- leading healthcare service provider of North India was today accredited with the world’s first of its kind ‘cGreen OT Certificate’ by Bureau Veritas to ensure patient safety in operation theatres. The certification will establish uniformity in the safety standard in operation theatres and will minimize the risk of infection in OTs. At a press conference organized today in the city, Mr Ravi Singh, Certification Manager at Bureau Veritas presented the Certificate to Mr. Rajit Mehta, Deputy Managing Director and Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Vice Chairman at Max Healthcare.

Bureau Veritas (BV), a European Standards organisation awarded Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket the cGreen OT certification making it the first hospital in the world to receive this prestigious accolade. The certificate recognizes Max Hospital’s adherence to the highest quality and safety

parameters for patients and healthcare workers in the highest infection-prone zone in a hospital, i.e, operation theatres.
The Green OT certification project is a first in the world certification and also the first ‘Made in India’ certification protocol developed by Bureau Veritas in conjunction with multi hospital stakeholders like clinicians, bio-medical, hospital QA, Green House Gas surveyors, administrators etc.
Talking about the need for this certification in India Mr. Rajit Mehta, Deputy Managing Director, Max Healthcare said, “cGreen OT certification shall help patients identify the hospitals which have achieved a safe and infection free environment inside the OT area. Educated and informed patients can choose the cGreen OT certified hospitals for their surgeries in order to be sure of the supreme level of quality. The certification awarded to Max Hospital reflects that we have met each criteria with the highest standard of care and safety measures. Keeping up with our commitment of providing patient centric care, we will continue to provide world-class healthcare services in an infection-free and protected environment. This is a great initiative by Bureau Veritas as it is very crucial for hospitals in India to measure the quality of their operation theatres based on a defined parameter.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Vice Chairman, Max Healthcare said , “Receiving the ‘cGreen OT certificate’ is a spectacular achievement for our hospital. It reiterates that Max Hospital is committed to providing the best healthcare services to our patients. Our hospital has always been a pioneer in the introduction of new technology and higher quality standards to provide patients with the best in medical care and this significant accreditation will indeed add another feather to our cap.”

Green from an OT perspective covers all parameters like air flows, OT set up, anesthesia machines, types of volatile agents used, filling systems adopted and scavenging systems in place. Green connotes cleaner techniques using modern technology and processes with a sensitive approach to environment.

Dr Kamal Fotedar, Director- Anaesthesia
, Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket, spoke about the process of making the hospital green from Operation theatre (OT’s) perspective. He said, “ Twenty one operation theatres at Max Hospital, Saket have been structured to minimize any form of pollution or Bio Medical waste being disposed of by the hospital. Volatile and other inhalational anaesthetic agents are used to anaesthetize patients and these are vented out of the building as waste gases. These anaesthetic gases contribute to global warming and Ozone depletion. It is therefore necessary to put in place and practice a system of Low Flow Anaesthesia which needs continuous, intense monitoring with sophisticated machines and scavenging system. This precisely and significantly reduces the green house gases emission from theatre. The cGreen OT certification assures our patient about safe anaesthesia administration methods adopted in our OTs. Some other key measures include controlling of temperature by measuring heat, coolness and humidity in operation theatre thereby addressing the issue of perspiration, which is one of the causes of infection in OT ’ s.”

As a part of the process Bureau Veritas conducted assessments/ audits of the hospital that focused on prevention of surgical site infections, safe anaesthesia, safe surgical teams and equipment and a measurement and quality assurance mechanism. The process concluded with a “Green Score”, based on the requisite quality and safety standards, which was rewarded to Max Hospital.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are an important cause of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI). Approximately 5% or more patients globally develop SSIs depending on the patient risk group and the procedure to be undertaken. In the past 90 years or more, numerous scholars across the globe have addressed the issue of the role of air as a source of SSIs. A recent research in the United States of America showed that healthcare facilities are second only to the food industry in contributing to waste products in the country. Operating rooms and labor-and-delivery suites together, the researchers say, account for nearly 70% of hospital waste. Through cGreen OT certification the healthcare industry can address this concern in India and ensure safety and minimal risk to the patients being treated and the healthcare workers operating in the OTs.
